Statistics rethink

Sir - I agree with many of the points made in your article UK growth data points to flaws in statistics (2/5 June). However, I do not believe ONS plans to follow American statisticians' lead and introduce "chain-weighting" to measure UK output more accurately is a wise move. ONS still relies too much on survey evidence rather than actual input figures by business and government.

A much better idea would be to rely on income tax, corporation tax and Vat returns and make it mandatory that each return contains one main industrial classification. Then there would be no need to send compulsory survey forms requesting statistical information. Some companies just throw away such questionnaires.
